history
In the early 1880s, the Berry Hill area was home to two distinct brass bands. One was comprised of members from a temperance organization, while the other consisted of employees from the Speedwell colliery. In 1911, these two bands united under the name Berry Hill Silver Band, thanks to the efforts of Mr Henry (Harry) Hawkins. Hawkins invited local residents, particularly those connected to the Salem Chapel founded in 1900, to practice in his front room, marking the beginning of a significant community tradition.

As the band grew, the need for larger practice spaces became evident. Over the years, the band rehearsed in various locations, including the "Tin Hut" on Joyford Hill, a barn at Five Acres, and the billiard hall at "The Hut" on Park Road, Berry Hill. In the 1930s, the band found a home in the Salem Chapel, later moving to a steel hut behind the chapel. By the 1960s and early 1970s, the band practiced in the Memorial Hall until 1974, when they finally built their own premises on the site of a former scout hut next to Salem Chapel on Park Road, where they continue to meet to this day.

In the 1950s, the band was known as The Berry Hill Silver Prize Band, reflecting its competitive spirit and numerous successes. The band’s reputation for excellence led to memorable film and TV appearances, thanks to Dennis Potter, a Berry Hill native. Potter commissioned the band to play in several of his productions, including "Between Two Rivers," "The Beast With Two Backs," and "Cold Lazarus" & "Karaoke." The band also appeared on "Songs of Praise" and "Meet the Ancestors," showcasing their talent to a wider audience.

Since the 1950s, the Berry Hill Band has enjoyed a series of contest successes and community performances. They have won numerous awards at various contests, including the Gloucestershire Association Contest, the Stroud Contest, and the Severnsound Brass Band Contest. The band's success extended to winning individual prizes for best soloists and instrumentalists. Their dedication and hard work have earned them a prominent place in the local brass band scene.

In 2003, Berry Hill Band formed a mutual help pact with the Parkend Band, ensuring both bands remained active and supported each other during outdoor engagements. This collaboration exemplified the band's community spirit and commitment to maintaining a strong musical presence. Today, the Berry Hill Band continues to thrive, thanks to its rich history, dedicated members, and unwavering passion for music.
